Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship Grant (SURF)

Summer Undergraduate Research Fellows (SURF) at Berry College work closely with their faculty mentor as they conduct high-quality research in their field of interest. This five- to ten-week program provides students with an opportunity to immerse themselves in their desired area of research while getting paid through the LifeWorks program.

Eligibility Criteria

Faculty initiated. Students must work at least 10 hours per week and 100 hours by the end of the 10-week period. Faculty should submit their application electronically to the Chair of their department. The Chair will submit it to the Dean of their school and the Dean’s Office will email the completed application to undergraduateresearch@berry.edu. Once a faculty member is approved, the student application and instructions for submission will be emailed to the faculty mentor to distribute to their students.

Special Requirements

Students will be compensated through the LifeWorks Program and may also qualify for free on-campus housing during the summer of the project it they meet the LifeWorks requirements. For faculty to receive the award, they must agree to supervise their student face-to-face for at least 20% of the hours that the student works and attend and/or organize weekly lunch meetings with groups of students, provide feedback to the OUR, and mentor the student in the dissemination of their work

Award Amount - The stipend for SURF mentors is: $300 per student for 100 hours of
student work; $750 per student for 200 hours of student work; $1,125 per student for 300 hours of student work; and $1,500 for each student that completes 400 hours of student work. While there is no limit to the number of students that may participate in the SURF program, the maximum stipend you may receive over a five week period is $3,750, or the equivalent of five full-time students.
