Voices of Desegregation
January 23, 2025, 11:00 a.m. -12:00 p.m.
Starting Location: The Berry College Chapel
CE Credit Event
In connection with Be Love Week programming, Oak Hill & The Martha Berry Museum will host "Voices of Desegregation," a guided tour marking the 60th anniversary of the desegregation of Berry College.
Participants will visit the Berry College Chapel and Blackstone Hall, two sites connected to Dr. John Bertrand’s historic announcement of the school’s desegregation. Along the route, excerpts from oral histories, Dr. Bertrand's essay "Without Regard to Race," and reaction letters* will be read by members of the Berry community. These readings will immerse the audience in the moment of desegregation at Berry and acknowledge that while "quiet and successful," it was not without incident, disappointing reactions, or meaningful support.
The one-hour tour will be led by Rachel McLucas, Curator for Oak Hill & The Martha Berry Museum, and move between the Berry College Chapel and Blackstone Hall. A shuttle will be available for participants needing assistance to travel between the two tour sites.
*Content Advisory for Program: Some historical letters contain hateful language directed towards POC.
