Berry College Interfaith Council Hosts Peace Event

The Berry College Interfaith Council recently presented “How Christians are Called to Work for Just Peace in Israel/Palestine” in the College Chapel.

The event provided discussion on how to navigate the Israeli and Palestinian conflict as a Christian. Guest speaker Rev. Dr. Mae Cannon shared detailed background on current events and encouraged audience members to embrace empathy for others. She implored students to “hate what is evil and cling to what is good” as written in Romans 12:9.

Cannon is the executive director of Churches for Middle East Peace and an ordained pastor in the Evangelical Covenant Church. Having completed two doctorate degrees and three master’s degrees, Cannon is well versed in history, theology and social studies. She primarily concentrates her efforts on advocacy, publishing books like “Beyond Hashtag Activism,” “Just Spirituality” and “Social Justice Handbook.”

Berry Theology and Biblical Studies Professor Jonathan Parker, an ordained Anglican priest, organized the event which included student-led musical worship.

Afterward, students engaged in a question-and-answer session and an optional prayer space.
