College Advisors Tour Berry

Berry College Admissions recently hosted more than 25 high school college advisors from the Georgia College Advising Corps.

The Georgia College Advising Corps works in underserved high schools throughout Georgia to increase the number of low-income, first-generation, and underrepresented students who attend and complete higher education. The group helps students find their way to college by placing well-trained, recent college graduates in high schools to work one-on-one with students as they navigate the complex college admissions process, including researching college options, completing applications, and applying for financial aid.

“A very exciting training collaboration for both organizations. We have a shared value of fostering a sense of belonging through providing opportunities for underrepresented students in higher education,” said Berry College Admission Director Glenn Getchell.

The advisors toured campus and attended information sessions led by the admissions team covering financial aid, the value of a liberal arts education and best practices for college essays. The advisors serve high schools in Atlanta and Social Circle and in Clarke, Colquitt, Grady, Henry, Newton and Rockdale counties.

Berry Vice President for Enrollment Management Andrew Bressette noted “our participation with the Georgia College Advising Corps helped to educate members on some of the ways private colleges and universities in the state, such as Berry, are equipped to help this population thrive in a college environment.”

The Georgia College Advising Corps meets a critical need. Although postsecondary education is essential to economic security, many students do not have the support needed to chart a path to success after graduation. This is especially true in Georgia’s high schools, where the average student-to-counselor ratio is 490:1. College enrollment can be even more challenging for the highest need students, who often do not have access to the resources and guidance necessary to enroll in college and secure financial aid.
