Trumpet and Organ Concert

Berry College will host a trumpet and organ concert at 7:30 p.m. Thursday (Jan. 30) at the College Chapel. 

Musicians Paul Merkelo, Brad Ulrich and Vance Reese will perform a selection of pieces that reflect their accomplishments for their respective instruments.

Merkelo holds the position of principal trumpet for the Montreal Symphony Orchestra in Canada. He has been a featured soloist in orchestras across the world, including the English Chamber Orchestra, Russian National Orchestra, Sapporo Symphony Orchestra, Venice Baroque Orchestra and Eastman Wind Ensemble. Merkelo was also invited to play as guest Principal Trumpet for the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra and New York Philharmonic.

Ulrich is a professor of trumpet at Western Carolina University. Throughout his career, he has performed and taught trumpet worldwide. Ulrich has served as the executive director of the Trumpet Festival of the Southeast and as the artistic director for the Brass Autumn Festival in St. Petersburg, Russia. Ulrich is a three-time recipient of the James Dooley Award for Excellence in Teaching Music and was also awarded the University Scholar Award from Western Carolina University.

Reese, a professor of music at Brevard College, has worked as an staff accompanist for the Music Academy of Western North Carolina since 2014. He is a double bass player with the Asheville Symphony Orchestra.
