Berry Students Take First in Literary Contest

Two Berry College students have earned first place awards in the Southern Literary Festival writing contest.

Courtney Wimberly won for poetry with her piece “Anuyoga” and Rachel Yeates won in the one-act play division with “Thoughts in a Museum.” They competed against student writers from 26 Southern colleges and universities, including the University of Mississippi, Furman University, Hendrix College and Rhodes College.

The Southern Literary Festival is an organization of southern colleges and schools founded in 1937 to promote southern literature. Each year a different school hosts the festival, an undergraduate writing conference that offers participants workshops, readings, and master classes in a wide variety of genres, including fiction, poetry, playwriting, and non-fiction.
