Viking Fusion Nominated for Station of the Year

Berry College’s student-run multimedia website was named a finalist in three categories for College Media Association’s annual Pinnacle Awards.

Viking Fusion was nominated for ""Four-Year TV Station of the Year"" in the Broadcast Division.

“This was a year of growth for Viking Fusion,” said Deanna Cunningham, executive director for Viking Fusion and a senior theater major from Franklin, Tenn. “We produced our first bilingual film, an experimental short film and worked to redefine what news means to our audience. You can’t grow if you don’t try new things. We tried, and now it is paying off.”

Viking Fusion was also nominated for ""Best TV Promo/PSA"" in the Broadcast Division. “Welcome to Valhalla,” a promotional video for the broadcast of Berry’s inaugural football game played in Valhalla Stadium.

“It was an ambitious project from the beginning in that we had two weeks to do it,” said senior Luke Chandler, who produced the video. “The fact that we overcame multiple roadblocks only makes me prouder of the recognition it has received.”

The third nomination for Viking Fusion was for Best Viral Video in the Broadcast Division. “The Studio Awakens,” a parody of the “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” trailer. The short film was produced by Chris Scott, a senior communication major from Knoxville, Tenn., and senior Kelsey Merriam.

“I think that its success is due to the passion and work that was put into it,” Scott said. “It shows that you don’t need a massive budget or a huge crew to create something that is quality entertainment.”

“The Studio Awakens” and “Welcome to Valhalla” were recognized earlier as nominees for Southeast Regional EMMY Awards and are finalists in the National Student Production Awards sponsored by College Broadcasters, Inc.

The Pinnacle Awards will be presented at a ceremony during the 2016 National College Media Convention in October.
